No, You Did Not Make a Mistake!

Look back on your life.

Do you have questions or regrets about things you did? Or things you did not do?

Have you wondered what would have happened if you had taken a different fork in the road of life?

Think of how much emotional energy you spend on such speculation. Should you have joined Company A instead of Company B? Should you have married Steve instead of your current partner? Would you have risen faster in your company if you had accepted that posting to Timbuktu?

Look at how much energy you are spending today as you ponder which fork in the road you should take. One of my students nearly had a nervous breakdown trying to decide between offers from McKinsey and Bain.

In an earlier blog I talked about the Friendly Universe. Einstein said the most important question you will ever ask yourself is, “Is the Universe friendly?”

That piece showed you how you can adopt a mental model that allows you to live in a friendly universe.

There is an added benefit to this.

A friendly universe will not allow you to make a mistake!

So whatever decision you take is the correct one for your situation. You don’t need to over-analyze or second guess yourself. You don’t need to writhe in an agony of indecision.

Just go ahead with what ‘feels’ right. It will be the right decision because a benevolent universe ensures that this is so.

And, remember, don’t spend your energy worrying whether you made the right decision. Instead, work on making the decision you took to become the right one.
